Welcome to 2011. A year where growing India with its ever growing generation has paved way for comics. Not American. Not Japanese. Indian comics. Welcome to the new and improved Indian comics.
Gone are the days when a comic in India meant an anthology of a wily minister, a stupid servant, a brave crow. Gone are the days when a comic in India only meant Tinkle or Amar Chitra Katha or Chacha Chaudhary. This scenario is just a distinct memory now. It’s a known fact that reading comics in India has always been steadily evolving. From comics to graphic novels to I-pad reads, India has encouraged and adopted everything that comics had to offer. With the dawn of a new century, comic readers, especially Indians, have looked forward to the Comic Industry to present them with books that took their breath away. And you know what? Indian comic-creators haven’t disappointed us. In fact, they have exceeded our expectations. From comics dealing with government issues to comic strips talking about funny incidents to dark and serious comics with ancient Indian curses and modern Indian vigilantes, Indian comics have been presenting us with amazing insights and some great artwork.
Vimanika comics(comics on Hindu Mythology), Level 10 comics(Anthology magazine JUMP(action, sci-fi, mythological) publishers), Pop culture publishing(Humor comic magazine publishers) are just a few names taken from the hundreds of comic companies that are growing in India, day by day, not only in quantity but also in quality.
So, next time you hold an Indian comic in hand, don’t be surprised if the humor in it is as good as Reader’s Digest’s jokes or the artwork is up to the level of that in foreign comics (Marvel and DC). This is just the tip of the mammoth iceberg that is becoming bigger and bigger, even as you read the article. Welcome to The Age of Resurrection of Indian Comics.
